TL;DR
Prompt engineering is just asking AI questions in a way that gets better answers. Three rules: be specific, give context, and say what format you want. That's 80% of it.
Why it matters
You've probably been frustrated when AI gives you a vague, unhelpful answer. That's usually not the AI's faultāit's how you asked. Learning a few simple tricks can transform your AI experience from frustrating to fantastic.
The 3 golden rules
Rule 1: Be specific
Vague (bad):
"Tell me about marketing."
Specific (good):
"Give me 5 social media post ideas for a coffee shop targeting young professionals."
The more specific you are, the more useful the answer.
Rule 2: Give context
No context (bad):
"Is this a good price?"
With context (good):
"I'm buying a used 2019 Honda Civic with 45,000 miles. The seller is asking $18,000. Is this a good price for the San Francisco Bay Area market?"
The AI doesn't know your situation unless you tell it.
Rule 3: Request a format
No format (bad):
"Explain photosynthesis."
With format (good):
"Explain photosynthesis in 3 bullet points suitable for a 10-year-old."
Telling AI how to structure the answer saves you time.
Quick templates you can use right now
For explanations
Explain [topic] in simple terms for someone who [context].
Keep it to [length].
Example: "Explain blockchain in simple terms for someone who isn't tech-savvy. Keep it to 2 paragraphs."
For writing help
Write a [type] about [topic] for [audience].
Tone: [formal/casual/etc].
Length: [specific length].
Example: "Write an email about rescheduling a meeting for my manager. Tone: professional but friendly. Length: 3-4 sentences."
For decisions
I need to decide between [option A] and [option B].
My priorities are [list priorities].
Give me pros and cons of each.
Example: "I need to decide between a MacBook Air and ThinkPad X1. My priorities are battery life and typing comfort. Give me pros and cons of each."
For summaries
Summarize this in [number] bullet points,
focusing on [specific aspects]:
[paste your text]
The most common mistake
Asking one vague question and giving up when the answer isn't helpful.
Instead: Treat AI like a conversation. If the first answer isn't right, follow up:
- "Make that shorter"
- "Give me more examples"
- "Explain that differently"
- "Focus more on X"
5 quick wins to try right now
- Add "for a beginner" to any explanation request
- Ask for bullet points instead of paragraphs
- Give an example of what you're looking for
- Specify length (e.g., "in 100 words or less")
- State your goal (why you're asking)

Frequently Asked Questions
Do these tips work with all AI tools?
Yes! These fundamentals work with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and any text-based AI. The principles are universal.
How long should my prompts be?
As long as needed to be clear and specificāusually 1-3 sentences for simple tasks, more for complex ones. Don't pad with unnecessary words.
What if I don't know what format to ask for?
Start with 'bullet points' for most thingsāit's easy to read and forces the AI to be organized. You can always ask for a different format afterward.
