Temperature
Also known as: Sampling Temperature, Randomness, Creativity Setting
In one sentence
A setting that controls how creative or random an AI's responses are. Low temperature produces predictable, focused answers. High temperature produces varied, more creative outputs.
Explain like I'm 12
Temperature is like a creativity dial on the AI. Turn it down and the AI plays it safe, always picking the most obvious answer. Turn it up and it gets more adventurous and surprising—but sometimes a bit weird.
In context
Most AI tools let you adjust temperature from 0 to 1 (or sometimes 0 to 2). At temperature 0, the AI always picks the most likely next word, giving you nearly identical responses every time. At temperature 1, it's more willing to pick less obvious words, making responses more creative but occasionally less accurate. ChatGPT, Claude, and most API-based tools expose this setting, though consumer chat interfaces often hide it behind the scenes.
